Spanish Studies

Spanish for Second Language Learners

Students interested in taking Spanish should pay close attention to proper placement, which is crucial for success in the program. We encourage students to assess their high school experience with the language, as well as their personal experience and exposure to Spanish in everyday life.

Placement policy

One year of foreign language study at the high school level equates to one semester of foreign language study in college. If a student has taken one year of Spanish in high school, for example, that student would be expected to enroll in SPN 1121, Beginning Spanish Language and Culture II. Students who have had two years or more of Spanish in high school should take the Spanish placement exam offered in the FLMC before registering for a class or during the first week of class to determine proper placement. If more than three years have elapsed between the student's high school language study and his or her continuation at FAU, he or she should take the Spanish placement exam and meet with an advisor in the Spanish program.

CLEP Exam

Call testing services at 297-3160 for details about receiving up to 16 credits through the CLEP exam. In order to exempt credits, a student must take the CLEP exam before enrolling in a language class. A STUDENT CANNOT BE ENROLLED IN A LANGUAGE CLASS AND RECEIVE CLEP CREDIT. Once you have taken the CLEP exam, the credit you earn will automatically be added to your unofficial transcript. Students who CLEP out of classes are encouraged to continue their language study at the next level so as to achieve proficiency and enhance their skills.

The university “Foreign Language Requirement” is satisfied by passing either

  1. two semesters of Beginning Spanish (1120 and 1121)
  2. the second semester only of Beginning Spanish (1121)
  3. any Spanish language course higher than SPN 1121

Students who are not “heritage speakers” should follow the sequence for second language learners as outlined below. Remember, you can start at any place in the sequence if you have appropriate skills for the level.

SPN 1120        Beginning Spanish Language and Culture I
SPN 1121        Beginning Spanish Language and Culture II

SPN 2203        Intermediate Spanish Language and Culture I
SPN 2204        Intermediate Spanish Language and Culture I

SPN 3400        Advanced Spanish Language and Culture I: Grammar
SPN 3401        Advanced Spanish Language and Culture II: Writing

Majors and minors in Spanish Studies can take co-requisite classes while taking SPN 3400. For example, Advanced Conversation, Spanish or Latin American Culture can be taken in the same semester as SPN 3400. Majors are encouraged to take requirements and electives taught in English (LIN 3010, LAS 3002, SPT 4930) early in their program when studying Spanish at the 2000 level.

SPN 3401 can be taken at anytime after completing SPN 3400.
